Ursula Von der Leyen’s speech in Strasbourg – Gaza

11-09- 25

The State of the Union address by President Von der Leyen on 10/09/25

The situation in Gaza is dire, and the European Institutions cannot remain silent in the face of this human tragedy unfolding before our eyes. I want to welcome the comments by the President of the Commission, President Von der Leyen, this morning in her state of the Union address. She is now softening to the idea of imposing sanctions on Israel and suspending the EU/Israel trade agreement.

For the first time, she has acknowledged what Fianna Fáil MEPs have been saying for some time. We cannot continue to trade freely with Israel when they are in blatant breach of so many humanitarian and international laws. We cannot continue trade with a government that is murdering innocent civilians.

I will be launching a petition to suspend our trade association agreement with Israel later this month in the European Parliament and I think we need to see urgent action on it now.

Suspend our free trade agreement with Israel is my clear message to EU leaders.  Do it now
