Ireland South MEP, Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, raised urgent concerns directly with EU Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen when she met him last night in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
Ní Mhurchú wrote to Commissioner Hansen on Friday last asking for immediate EU Commission action on irregular practices in Brazil’s beef sector.
Ní Mhurchú’s intervention comes after a recent Farmer’s Journal investigation revealed the circulation of banned antibiotics in Brazilian livestock production, as well as longstanding failures in traceability and regulatory oversight in the country’s meat sector.
The MEP has warned that these issues pose a serious threat to EU public health, undermine consumer trust, and distort competition for European farmers who operate under far stricter standards.
