“Game-Changer for Irish SMEs” – Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú Welcomes European Parliament Approval of New European Business Wallet to Slash Red Tape and Deliver Multi-Billion Savings

Cynthia Ní Mhurchú MEP for Ireland South has strongly welcomed the European Parliament’s Internal Market and Consumer ProtectionCommittee’s decisive vote approving the creation of the European Business Wallet.

The Ireland South MEP who is a full Member of the Committee has been an advocate in the fight against Red Tape and overbearing Regulation since she was elected to the European Parliament in June 2024.

This landmark initiative is designed to slash administrative red tape, accelerate cross-border trade, and unlock an estimated €160 billion in annual savings for businesses across the European Union.

The European Business Wallet introduces a harmonised, secure digital tool allowing enterprises and public bodies to seamlessly prove identities, share verified documents, apply legal electronic seals, and communicate across EU borders with full legal recognition.

Ms Ní Mhurchú said “The vote on Tuesday June 2nd 2026 marks a massive victory for simplification and a significant step forward for the Irish business community. For too long, our enterprises particularly small and medium-sized businesses have been bogged down by endless administrative paperwork, repetitive identity checks, and costly compliance processes just to operate across EU borders. The European Business Wallet changes all of that by creating a single, trusted digital identity recognized right across the Union. ”

The initiative explicitly addresses the disproportionate administrative burdens faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which often lack the heavy legal and compliance resources of multinational corporations. Under the new rules, digital actions carried out through the Wallet will have full legal effect across all Member States, replacing slow, paper-based or in-person procedures.

“This is about making it faster, easier, and dramatically cheaper for an Irish company to scale up and trade internationally. Take a real-world scenario: an Irish manufacturer who receives a major order from an EU partner can now instantly verify via the Wallet system that the buyer is genuine and legally registered, eliminating transaction fraud risks greatly. Similarly, an agri-food exporter will be able to store official health certificates and export permits directly within their secure digital wallet, sharing them instantly with continental distributors rather than manually resubmitting physical paperwork every single time.” said Ní Mhurchú

The European Business Wallet will equip Irish companies with a robust suite of digital capabilities, including:

Instant Digital Identity Verification: Proving legal identity and registration status immediately without repeatedly submitting physical company extracts or notarised paperwork.

Cross-Border Authentication: Verifying the legal standing of external suppliers, partners, or customers before entering into binding commercial contracts.

Secure Document Management: Storing and instantly sharing verified official permits, licences, and safety approvals with public sector authorities.

Legal Digital Signatures & Seals: Digitally signing contracts, timestamps, and regulatory submissions with full, legally binding recognition across all EU Member States.

Delegation of Authority: Enabling company directors to securely delegate specific legal authorities to financial managers, internal employees, or external legal advisors.

Unified Public Communications: Streamlining official regulatory correspondence with various Member State authorities into one singular, highly secure digital channel.

Ms Ní Mhurchú concluded by saying “The economic benefits of this digital tool are extraordinary. European Commission estimates indicate that broader simplification measures will save up to €5 billion in publicadministrative costs by 2029, while the Business Wallet itself is projected to unlock an astonishing €160 billion in direct operational savings for European businesses every single year. By removing friction from cross-border public procurement and customer onboarding, we are giving Irish SMEs a powerful digital passport to compete and win on the Europeanstage.”
